The Power of Words – A Compassionate, Encouraging Email Can Change Someone’s Life

As long ago as 1839, the English author, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, in his play about Cardinal Richelieu, coined the phrase “The Pen is mightier than the sword.” The full impact of this wise, insightful expression was recently brought home to me very dramatically.

Let me explain how this came about.

A number of years ago my wife, who is a professional handwriting analyst with a popular website on the internet, graphology-world.com, received a sample of handwriting from a teen-aged young man anxious to have his handwriting analyzed

As soon as my wife read the letter it was clear the youngster was very distressed and desperately unhappy. He suffered from very low self-esteem and had a number of problems which he felt unable to cope with.

His letter was a cry of despair. He wanted to know whether it was possible for my wife to see any indication at all in his handwriting of any hidden talents he possessed.

The detailed analysis of hand writing is not something that can be done simply by a casual glance at a handwriting sample. It requires many hours of careful scrutiny in which dozens of different indications of character are carefully pieced together to provide a composite and accurate picture of the writer’s personality. Because of this, the professional charges for this service can be fairly costly.

The young man mentioned in his letter that he was still a student and couldn’t afford to pay required fee for the analysis he so desperately wanted. If my wife would be prepared to do the analysis free of charge he would be very grateful indeed. He realized however, that this was probably too much to ask.

My wife was deeply touched by the obvious sincerity expressed in his letter and decided to do the analysis free of charge. After a detailed study of the youngster’s handwriting, she discovered that he definitely had undeveloped talents and skills.

She sent him a warm, compassionate, encouraging email with a list of many fine qualities she had found in his handwriting.

My wife received an immediate acknowledgment of her email thanking her profusely for her generosity and kindness. That was ten years ago. Since then she heard nothing at all from the young man for whom she had felt so much sympathy… until a short while ago.

Suddenly, out of the blue, a few weeks ago she received a letter from the young man she had helped so many years ago by giving him the self-confidence he so desperately needed at the time.

The tone of this letter was quite different from the anguished cry for help she had previously received. The young man informed my wife that he had qualified as a Veterinarian; found the work satisfying and fulfilling and was very happy indeed with his career and his life.

The young man assured my wife that he would be forever grateful for her help and the email she had sent him at a time when he had felt so depressed and disheartened. He told her that her words of encouragement had changed his life.

My wife was obviously very pleased indeed to learn that she has had such a positive effect on someone’s life. I have also derived a certain measure of satisfaction from this story with a happy ending.

It has always been my belief that everyone should develop their creative powers to the very best of their ability. For this reason, when my wife first showed an interest in learning more about the fascinating field of handwriting analysis more than thirty years ago, I encouraged her in every way.

Over the many years that she had practiced handwriting analysis, she has found it intellectually stimulating and also an opportunity to make full use of her ability to think creatively. Creative thinking is a subject in which I have always been profoundly interested.
